About
the Event
The Atlanta Steeplechase, now referred to as The Best Lawn Party in
Georgia, is the region’s premier spring social event. Held annually at
Kingston Downs race course along the banks of the beautiful Etowah River, it
combines the best in cosmopolitan lifestyle, Southern hospitality and family
entertainment with the exhilarating Sport of Kings. On the second Saturday
each April, the countryside comes alive with colorful jockey silks, powerful
thoroughbreds, sumptuous hospitality parties, terrier races, hat contests,
and carefree spectators enjoying an unforgettable day of horse racing and
fun.
The Atlanta Steeplechase benefits two revered Georgia
icons,
Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation and the
University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine. Join the celebration that
started in 1966 with fewer than 100 Guarantors enjoying the first Tent Party
while picnickers and tailgaters established a custom of gourmet food as part
of Atlanta’s unique ‘Chase day. Today, the 435 acre Kingston Downs hosts
fun-loving spectators – whether at lavish private corporate parties “on the
hill” or up close to the action in the general admission infield – for a
great day of springtime racing. And, whether you have been a devoted
spectator since the beginning, or you are new to the Steeplechase tradition,
come experience the rite of spring that celebrates championship racing
with food,
fashion, fun and friendship.

2008 Atlanta
Steeplechase Painting by Ginger Lowry
For generations, the most beautiful and statuesque of animals, the horse,
has intrigued artists from around the world. This year’s featured artist,
Ginger Lowry, is no exception. Her dynamic motion and bold colors perfectly
capture the energy and excitement that embody the Atlanta Steeplechase
experience. Her subject matter should come as no surprise – Ginger’s family
bred and raced Thoroughbreds when she was a child.
“I want my paintings to move,” says Ginger. “I want the viewer to be afraid
to look away because the scene may change.” In her own words, Ginger’s work
captures “microseconds of action and color, speed and tension – all over in
the blink of an eye.”
Ginger’s work has been exhibited and collected the world over – in homes and
galleries as near as the Southwestern U.S. and as far as Sydney, Australia.
Her shows and projects include The Trail of the Painted Ponies, The Iroquois
Steeplechase and most recently The Dubai World Cup.
Today, Ginger lives and works in Cloudland, Georgia with her husband,
Timothy Brown, who is her “greatest support” in all her artistic endeavors. |
